About The Role

The SandboxAQ team is looking for a Software Engineer with expertise in cloud native engineering to build systems to support our scientific computing efforts. This individual will be responsible for architecting, building and maintaining infrastructure and internal tooling to scale our computational drug discovery and materials science systems. They should be action-oriented, have strong engineering skills, and be comfortable making technical decisions. Additionally, they will communicate openly and effectively with colleagues and share team dislike of office politics.

Core Responsibilities:

Architect and build critical infrastructure systems supporting drug discovery, material science, and other innovative research lines.
Develop and maintain internal tooling for scientist and developer experience.
Work in close collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to understand requirements, evaluate trade-offs, and deliver solutions to build high-impact, high-value products.
Communicate effectively and influence project direction to apply best practices when it comes to availability, scalability, operational excellence, and cost management.
Be adaptable - this team member will need to contribute to tools at a wide variety of maturity levels from internal prototypes to large production systems.
Design software that is performant at scale on modern cloud platforms, while being robust, adaptable, and easy to maintain.
Normal SWE tasks - architect and review design docs, write code, build APIs, code reviews, etc.
Help shape the software engineering culture.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field or equivalent work experience
2-4+ years of experience as a professional software engineer
Interested in scientific computing and enabling scientists to perform cutting edge research
Experience with cloud technologies e.g. AWS, Azure, GCP, Docker, Kubernetes
Experience working with distributed systems, networking, data storage
Experience with Python
Experience building and maintaining APIs
Able to articulate software concepts clearly to technical individuals with diverse backgrounds, including those less familiar with software engineering.
Comfortable working in a startup environment

Nice to have:

Experience working with scientific researchers in drug discovery and/or material science
Experience with HPC infrastructure, batch workloads, cluster management, Job scheduling
Experience deploying multi-cloud applications
