About the Department

Since its origins in 1890 as one of the three main divisions of the University of Chicago, the University of Chicago Press has embraced as its mission the obligation to disseminate scholarship of the highest standard and to publish serious works that promote education, foster public understanding, and enrich cultural life. Through our books and journals, we seek not only to advance scholarly conversation within and across traditional disciplines but, in keeping with the University of Chicago's experimental tradition, to help define new areas of knowledge and intellectual endeavor.

Job Summary

The Graphic Artist will design and produce print and digital materials for the marketing department of the books division at the University of Chicago Press. This includes advertising, direct mail, and publicity.

Responsibilities

Design and production of print and digital advertising.
Design and production of direct mail catalogs and other related pieces.
Produce two large seasonal catalogs.
Mange image assets using Photoshop.
Uses on-the-job experience to complete a variety of assignments, such as coordinating production support with outside vendors, as needed.
Works within processes to ensure that graphic projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the user's satisfaction. Acts as a resource for colleagues with less experience.
Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

Associate’s Degree in graphic design.
Bachelor's degree in graphic design.

Experience:

Strong typographic skills.
Two year minimum experience in graphic design or related field.
Strong conceptual design ability.

Technical Knowledge and Skills:

Experience with Macintosh platform.
Experience with Adobe InDesign, Adobe PhotoShop, and Adobe Acrobat.
Experience with Dreamweaver or similar.

Preferred Competencies

High degree of organization and the ability to handle many projects.
Excellent interpersonal skills in relating to peers and supervisors.

Working Conditions

Must be able to meet deadlines and to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
Must have flexibility to deal with last-minute changes on projects.
Extended periods of time at computer
